West Africa is comprised of Gambia, Mauritania, Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Benin, Liberia, Sierra Leon, Cameroon, Senegal, and Gabon. West African communities in South Florida are made up of groups of Yoruba, Ewe, Ibo, Hausa, Ga, Fanti, Bendel, Tre, Edo, Acan, and Senegalese ethnic groups. More than 12,000 West Africans have settled in South Florida bringing their culture and customs along with them.Major Nigerian and Ghanaian languages spoken in South Florida are Yoruba (which is showcased here), Ga, Ibo, and Fanti. There are many resources available in South Florida to give you a taste of West Africa, and we hope that you will make use of them and ENJOY! OTSI-DEN!

It's Celebration Time!!

The first weekend after Nigeria's Independence Day (October 1st), is the time when for Yoruba Day, Ibo Day, Edo Day, or Bendel Day take place. Downtown Miami is the center for celebration at this time. The University of Miami Student Union has celebrations also that are on-campus and open to the public. UM will be able to provide information on precise location of celebrations downtown, and elsewhere.

Activities include: dancing, fashion shows, dining, and scholarships awarded to honor students in the community and abroad. Come join in the FUN!!
