Wales 2009 Castle Page

Lots of castles in Wales helloxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Ring of medieval castles from the 13th century, Edward's conquest of Wales.
There are some old Welsh castles, but there's much less to see. (It's pretty clear who won that conflict, and what the architectural consequences were for the next 700 or 800 years.)
Modern-day castles are the "folies" of 19th century industrialists.

Conway Castle: approaching from across the estuary

Conway from tavern in the city wall (below).

below: from comfortable sitting spot at rear.

Conway Castle in traffic. (Turquoise bus is the kind of bus I take: Arriva.)

Tower stair (modernized). The person in the red coat is a recurring theme.

Also the row below--castle in the fabric of the town. (Zach, note car.)

More Conway in the fabric of the town.

Below: Caernarfon Castle, view from the river.

Caernarfon Castle from the square. (grayish day--very unusual.)
on a sunnier day (our choir member friend's bike/ beic shop, yellow sign, at right)

PenRhyn 19th century castle (on 15th century base), near Bangor

Originally waterfront property, the sea is now a few hundred yards across a silted plain.

Most famous for its gardens (including these otherworldly yews). The interior is full of heavy (expensive) Victorian artifacts. (Great collection of stuffed birds, both local and exotic.)
